Mad Hatter's Tea Party

When we were asked to sponsor the 2016 Survivor Tent for the CIBC Run for the Cure, we jumped at the opportunity. Giving back to a great cause and having full creative reign for a whimsical tea party? Yes, please!   Alice in Wonderland is such a fun theme because you can interpret Lewis Carrol's book in so many ways. There is the bright and colourful Disney version, the unique and over-the-top styling of Tim Burton, and the always popular vintage garden party taking over Pintrest. We took this classic and added a Pink Pumpkin twist, which included showcasing our vintage tea-cup collection (many years in the making!), tons of books, and lots of pink sparkle.

The Survivor Tent is a special VIP section in the run-site for cancer survivors. It's a place where women meet year-after-year to reconnect, make new friendships, and bond. Most importantly, it's a place where women that have battled, or are still fighting, breast cancer are to be celebrated for the survivors they are. We wanted to create a space that was fun with lots of conversation starters and hidden treats. We wanted to pay homage to the original Lewis Carrol by incorporating books into our tablescape. We also wanted to pull in major girl power vibes, which is why most of the books in our tent are by women or about women. Strong women. Brave women. Empowered women.

In a nod to Disney's Alice in Wonderland, we added a custom build directional sign at the entrance of the tent. We had the classic “This Way” and “That Way” but also added a special “Keep Going” to all of the survivors, pointing into their VIP space. We topped our sign with a life-sized Mad Hatter's hat, tied with a pink sash, of course.

We wanted our Survivor Tent to be a cheerful space. We pulled in lots of bright colours, especially in our floral. We used pinks for breast cancer awareness, but also pulled in freshness with crisp green mini hydrangea, bright mums and white hydrangea.

No matter which version of Alice is your favorite, all have one thing in common: whimsy. From the tiny rabbit perched on a tea-cup to the keys and crystals hanging from the tent ceiling to the tea pot topped candelabra, there were so many little details in this tent. There was meaning in every aspect of our tablescape. We filled our tent with love, sparkle, and girl power.

In the words of the Mad Hatter: “It's always tea time”.
